The reason why war and Christianity is incompatible, the author demonstrates herein, not only from own, longstanding experiences, but documents the contradiction with cold, hard facts and testimonies by many other personalities and gripping, deeply shocking pictures.  The absurd, antichristian, widespread “just war” theory is clearly disproved by convincing, practical examples.  How many cruelties, abominations and hypocrisy have happened under the cloak of holiness and under proud patriotism/nationalism (to this day), even there, where one would least have expected them!  All that, and much more, will come to light in a very sobering way in this DECLARATION, not to create bitterness, but for the sake of truth and knowledge; or as the Bible says: “...lest ye forget…”

The subject, war and Christianity, is, of course, a “hot iron”, but Paul felt, that, if he had kept quiet, “the stones would immediately cry out.” —Jesus Christ.  Don’t we hear the Saviour also now asking: “Where is your faith?”

Long before this opus was written, the American theologian, Dr. Jacob A.O. Preus, then President of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, wrote on March 12, 1976, in general, “To Whom it may Concern: On a trip to Oregon recently, I met Doctor Wolfgang Paul… I think he has some very interesting and significant things to say, and I have read with care his material.”

In the present treatise, the reader will also learn something he/she probably did not anticipate.  Thus, Martin Gross, of the Hutterian Brethren, states in his detailed testimonial about CHALLENGING THOUGHTS ON WAR, including A DECLARATION: “...This will be the book for all believers and non-believers.  Either people will love it or hate it.  …”

No more concise expression sums up the long, eventful history of the versatile, international author than this: “He is a graduate of the University of Difficulty.”
